As part of the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the death of the painter Pablo Picasso, the Museo del Prado yesterday inaugurated the exhibition Picasso, el Greco and analytical cubism, with a selection of works by the Malaga-born artist alongside the work of El Greco in a show curated by Carmen Giménez.
Until 17 September, room 9B of the Villanueva building houses this exhibition, which, sponsored by the Friends of the Museo del Prado Foundation and with the collaboration of the Community of Madrid, focuses on the Cubist work of Picasso and the late work of El Greco.
Although almost all authors agree in limiting El Greco’s influence almost exclusively to Picasso’s youth, this exhibition suggests that it was much more profound and lasting, as he was particularly crucial to the development of Cubism and, in particular, to the phase of analytical Cubism, in works such as El aficionado or Acordeonista.
