The Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, will be number five on the PSOE’s list of candidates for the Spanish Congress of Deputies in the general elections on 23 July, as confirmed yesterday by the Regional Committee of the Madrid socialists.
Some media, such as Diario de Cádiz, had speculated some days ago that Albares would head the PSOE list for the province of Cádiz, but in the end this post will be occupied by the Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska.
Since it is certain that the PSOE will obtain more than five deputies for Madrid, Minister Albares, who is a career diplomat, will become a member of parliament for the first time. He has never been one until now, although he has been a socialist militant since his youth.
Yesterday, in Paris, before his confirmation was announced, Albares said, when asked about his inclusion on the lists, that “for any socialist it would be a source of pride to be” on them.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs will finally go as number five in the candidacy to be headed by Pedro Sánchez, with the Third Vice-President and Minister of Technological Transition, Teresa Ribera, as number two, and the Ministers of the Presidency, Félix Bolaños and Defence, Margarita Robles, respectively, as numbers three and four.
