The Embassy of Ireland, in conjunction with the British Embassy, is commemorating the 25th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement with a screening of the documentary Wave Goodbye to Dinosaurs, at the Centro cultural Casa de Vacas, tomorrow Tuesday at 7pm. This documentary shows the story of women in Northern Ireland who come together to form an all-female, cross-community political party, win seats at the negotiating table and fight to ensure that their policies around human rights, equality and inclusion are reflected in the Agreement. Please sign up for the event at the Eventbrite link.

The Irish Embassy has also prepared a number of cultural events to mark the occasion, including a performance by Irish dance group Irish Treble with Celtas Cortos in Madrid (2 June), in Burgos with their show Celtic Journey (10 June) and in Murcia they will take part in the San Javier International Folklore Festival (24 June). For more information on all their concerts during the rest of the summer, check out their website.

For its part, the Fundación Casa de México is hosting the exhibition El poeta y el artista. Seamus Heaney and Jan Hendrix in Yagul from 9 June to 10 September. See their website for more information.

The Yeats Society Madrid will hold an evening of poetry and music on Tuesday 13 June at 7 p.m. at the Richmond Park Performance School (Calle de la Costa Brava, 55).

The Embassy is also participating in Photoespaña this year with Framing Ireland, in collaboration with Tourism Ireland. This exhibition is a collection of street photography that shows real life in Ireland from a different and less common perspective, through the lens of four Irish photographers, Eamonn Doyle, Brendan Ó Sé, Jeanette Lowe and Terry McAuliffe. It will take place at B The Travel Brand (Calle Miguel Ángel, 33) and will be open from 15 June to 15 September.

Meanwhile, Tourism Ireland is running a competition to win 3 pairs of tickets to see Sharon Corr in concert on Friday 23 June at Sala Clamores in Madrid at 9.30pm. More information on how to enter can be found on their website.

The Centro de Estudios Iberoamericanos y Transatlánticos FGUMA-UMA, through the Aula María Zambrano de Estudios Transatlánticos of the University of Málaga, announces a new edition of the Premios Hispano-Irlandeses del Aula María Zambrano de Estudios Transatlánticos, with the aim of promoting research and raising awareness of relations between the two countries in any academic and scientific field. These awards are aimed at teachers, students, journalists and researchers from all over the world and have a prize of 1,000 euros for the winning paper and a runner-up prize of 200 euros for the second best. The deadline for entries is 18 December 2023.

Last but not least, the Provincial Historical Archive of Cádiz has published an updated catalogue of the testamentary dispositions made by the important Irish colony residing in Cádiz during the 18th century, a city which at that time had a monopoly on maritime trade between Spain and its American territories. Many of them participated as merchants in this activity. Others, however, dedicated themselves to other activities such as military careers, etc. There are a total of 1,091 testamentary dispositions, which can be consulted online at this link.

And to celebrate Bloomsday in Spain, the Embassy has also prepared the following events:

– The Bloomsday Society Madrid will celebrate Bloomsday on Wednesday 14 June at the Ateneo de Madrid, at 19:00. The evening will consist of readings and music by Joyce. For more information, email bloomsdaysociety@gmail.com.

– The Asociación Soy de la Cuesta and Turismo de Irlanda, in collaboration with the Asociación de Comerciantes del Barrio de las Letras, will organise the II Madrid-Dublin Bloomsday on Friday 16 June. It will begin with a reading on the Cuesta de Moyano and artists such as comedian Joaquín Reyes, singer Christina Rosenvinge, actor Jonathan D. Mellor, podcaster Nuria Pérez and writer Marcos Giralt Torrente will participate along the special route through the city. More information on this link.
