The Spanish government yesterday expressed its “rejection” of the “rhetoric employed” last Sunday by the Israeli Minister of National Security, the far-right Itamar Ben Gvir, during his visit to the Esplanade of the Mosques in Jerusalem, and called for “maintaining the commitment to scrupulously respect the status quo of the Holy Places.”

“Spain calls on all parties to do everything possible to avoid tensions at the Esplanade of the Mosques and to preserve stability, and to support Jordan’s fundamental work in this regard,” the Foreign Ministry added in a statement.

During his controversial visit to the Esplanade of the Mosques, Gvir – accompanied by the head of the Israeli Police and several religious figures – declared that “Hamas’ threats will not change anything, we are the masters of Jerusalem and the entire Land of Israel.”
