The film Frida Kahlo, directed by British director Ali Ray, will premiere next Monday, 29 May, as part of the Exhibition on Screen series.
Frida Kahlo’s legendary style, her passion for life, men, women, politics and her indigenous-Mexican heritage have made her a ubiquitous feminist icon. This personal and intimate film offers privileged access to her works and highlights the source of her feverish creativity, resilience and unparalleled sensuality. But what is known about her as an artist? Frida Kahlo was a prolific self-portraitist who used the canvas as a mirror at all stages of her turbulent and sometimes tragic life.
Guided by the artist’s own words and using the latest technology, we take a closer look at her work throughout her career. In addition, through her handwritten letters, we gain access to her deepest emotions and discover the secrets and symbolism contained in her art.
The film includes interviews with world-renowned scholars and curators. Exhibition on Screen explores the extraordinary symbolism in Frida Kahlo’s paintings from a new perspective: her timeless self-portraits, her maternal longings, or her great love for Diego Rivera, offer a feast of vitality and colour on the big screen.
