The Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) will contribute 150,000 euros to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) emergency appeal to provide humanitarian assistance to the people most affected by Cyclone Mocha in Myanmar.
Cyclone Mocha made landfall in Myanmar on May 14 as a category four tropical cyclone, with winds of up to 250 kilometers per hour, heavy rainfall, storm surge, flash flooding and landslides. It is the strongest cyclone in the Bay of Bengal in the last ten years and has affected millions of people in the region.
According to estimates, approximately 2.2 million people are in the cyclone’s area of influence, of which at least 200,000 are in a particularly vulnerable situation and require assistance.
In view of this situation, Spain, through AECID, is joining international efforts with a contribution of 150,000 euros to support the IFRC’s emergency appeal. The aim of the appeal, which amounts to five million Swiss francs (5,137,000 euros), is to provide vital assistance to some 37,500 people affected by the cyclone.
Through this emergency appeal, the agency said in a press release, the IFRC is supporting the Myanmar Red Cross Society to scale up its provision of immediate assistance to provide shelter, water and sanitation, access to health services, cash transfers and livelihoods and protection to the most vulnerable among those affected.
