The Diplomat
On Saturday 13 May, a tribute organised by the Embassy of Uruguay to the Uruguayan composer Carmen Barradas (1888-1963) took place at the Chair of the Ateneo de Madrid.
The activity consisted of a colloquium followed by a commented concert. The colloquium was attended by the prestigious researchers Carmen Cecilia Piñero (Spain), Miguel Molina Alarcón (Spain), Gabriela Aceves Sepúlveda (Mexico-Canada) and Juan Manuel Bonet (Spain).
The concert featured emblematic pieces by Barradas, as it was in the same space where the composer premiered several of her works belonging to the Spanish-American musical avant-garde 100 years ago. The Uruguayan pianist Patricia Mendoza Lluberas was in charge of the performance, offering the work Prisioneros for the absolute premiere, plus four of the works premiered in 1922 and seven other pieces, some of them first heard in Spain.
In addition, a publication was presented which offers the research work of Mendoza Lluberas and Santos Melgarejo on 20 pieces by Carmen Barradas and which includes a CD and a book with texts in Spanish and English.
The tribute to Carmen Barradas began with a commented concert in the city of Buenos Aires on 31 March at the Universidad de las Artes, followed by a colloquium and concert in Madrid on 13 May and a commented concert on 16 May in the city of Barcelona, at the Sala Nota 79, under the auspices of the Casa América Catalunya. The concert tour will continue this year in three Uruguayan cities, Montevideo, Salto and Paysandú.
