Tomorrow Thursday at 7 p.m., Casa Árabe is offering a new screening as part of its Film of the Month programme. This time it is the film Farha, inspired by the Palestinian Nakba and the work of director Darin Sallam, who will accompany those present at the subsequent discussion. Screening in original version with Spanish subtitles (VOSE). The discussion will be in Spanish and English, with simultaneous interpretation in the auditorium.
Inspired by real events, Farha tells the story of the Nakba, the Arabic word for ‘catastrophe’, from the point of view of a Palestinian teenager who locks herself in a shed for hours to escape the violence in the streets. A historic moment when thousands of Arabs were expelled from their land by the State of Israel and whose conflict continues to this day.
Farha is a teenager living in a Palestinian village. Inseparable from her best friend Farida, she dreams of going to school, but life in the village, and in Palestine as a whole, is about to change. With the UN agreement to partition the British Mandate of Palestine, the war between Israelis and Arabs begins. Farha’s father decides to lock her in a small shed with a promise to return. In the days that follow, Farha will have a life-changing experience, forcing her to leave her childhood behind.
This is the first feature film directed by Darin Sallam and had its world premiere at the 46th Toronto International Film Festival, won 12 awards to date at international film festivals including Best Film, Best Director, Jury Prize, Audience Award and Grand Prize and began streaming in December 2022 on Netflix worldwide.
