Last Thursday the Embassy of Haiti celebrated its Haitian Flag Day with a mass officiated by the Apostolic Nuncio, Bernardito Cleopas Auza, in the chapel of the Nunciature, and attended by the ambassadors of Paraguay, Panama, Nicaragua, Equatorial Guinea, Slovenia and Venezuela, along with members of the delegations of Turkey, Armenia, Japan and Dominican Republic.

The Nuncio of His Holiness expressed during the mass he officiated at the beginning of the ceremony his “desire for concord and peace for the Haitian people”. The Ambassador Chargé d’Affaires of Haiti, Guy G. Lamothe, then took the floor and, after thanking the Apostolic Nuncio for hosting this commemorative event at the Nunciature, said: “this is a date very dear to all Haitians in the calendar of the national ephemeris, as it recalls the creation of the national flag of the Republic of Haiti, the blue and red bicolour”.

“The date of 18 May was decisive for Haiti’s independence, continued Guy G. Lamothe, but it is without doubt a contribution to humanity. Today, 220 years later, the Haitian people are facing a series of difficulties and major challenges, and want to draw from the lessons of the creation of the flag, the necessary political consensus. In this new perspective, it is to be hoped that the solidarity of the friendly country that is Spain will be more than present to accompany us on this desert crossing”.

To conclude, Ambassador Chargé d’Affaires Guy G. Lamothe recalled the words of Pope Francis: “Haiti today is living a critical situation, an ordeal, as if it is not finding the right path, and I don’t think the international organisations have understood how to do it. So we need help and support.”
