With the Gabriela Mistral Amphitheatre of Casa América full to overflowing, the Embassy and the Consulate General of Paraguay in Madrid celebrated last Friday the show Serenata al Paraguay, with the participation of Paraguayan artists living in Spain.
The event took place on the occasion of Paraguay’s national celebrations, held annually on 14 and 15 May to commemorate the days when Paraguay became an independent country in 1811.
The Paraguayan ambassador, Ricardo Scavone, welcomed the attendees and pointed out that “today we have the joy of celebrating the beginning of the process of Paraguay’s independence, of the Constitution of Paraguay as an independent and sovereign state in Madrid, to offer a show to our community with Paraguayan artists who live and work in Spain and who spread our culture, our music, our dance here in Spanish territory”.
The polka, the guaranía, the sounds of the harp and other typical expressions of folklore and the great cultural wealth of Paraguay were the protagonists of the meeting between the clapping and accompaniment of the dedicated spectators, most of them members of the Paraguayan community in Madrid, who exalted the South American country with cheers and continuous applause.
The harpist Noelia Sanabria, the singers Germán Barbúdez, Fátima Fernández, Teresa Maciel, Edén Méndez & Diana Grance, together with the dancers of the group Origen Paraguay Ballet and the Kathia Coronel Dance School were enthusiastically applauded with their performances, and closed the event with a group number that included the spectacular Danza de la botella and a selection of Paraguayan polkas.
