Thailand’s new ambassador to Spain, Vosita Vorasaph, underlined the growth in bilateral trade between the two countries in recent years, despite the situation caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Vosita Vorasaph, who took up his post just over a fortnight ago, hosted a reception at his residence in Madrid on Thursday for the “Friends of Thailand”, which was attended by businessmen, professors and others from the private sector who have ties with the Asian country.
The ambassador gave a brief speech in which he indicated, among other things, that one of the priorities of his stay in Spain is to maintain contacts with the people who do business in Thailand, whom he thanked for their support in increasing trade exchanges.
Thus, he pointed out that last year, two-way trade between Thailand and Spain reached approximately 1,491 million euros, after increasing by more than 20% in 2021. “This is,” he said, “a good sign of the economic resilience of both countries from COVID-19.
He added that in the tourism sector, too, there was also a positive sign of recovery with around 87,500 Spaniards travelling to Thailand in 2022, and 25,000 having done so in the first three months of this year. “We are confident that these figures can rise to perhaps 200,000 next year, which was the pre-COVID-19 statistic,” he said.
The reception, which included a display of Thai cuisine, featured a group of traditional Thai dancers from the Thai High School of Drama, who travelled from Bangkok to perform at the event.
