The Spanish Government reiterated yesterday its “concern over the escalation of violence that is taking place in Israel and in the occupied Palestinian territories, particularly in the Gaza Strip”, which has left a balance of dozens of wounded and dead among the Palestinian and Israeli civilian population.
“It is urgent to achieve a ceasefire to avoid the loss of more human lives,” the Foreign Ministry stated through a communiqué. “Spain urges the parties to respond to the efforts in this regard led by Egypt, in order to advance the stabilization agreed in the Aqaba/Charm el Chej process and resume the political path towards a just and lasting peace,” it concluded.
This is the second communiqué issued by the Government this week in relation to these events. On May 9, the Executive of Pedro Sánchez condemned the new escalation of violence in Gaza, reiterated “its condemnation of terrorism, as well as of the reprisals that have caused civilian victims”, and reminded Israel of “Israel’s obligation to respect international humanitarian law”.
In that communiqué, Spain also urged the parties to reopen the negotiating framework initiated in the Aqaba/Charm el-Chech process “to give a political perspective to the two-State solution, the only possible response to the legitimate national aspirations of Palestinians and Israelis”.
