“The legacy of the National Leader has continuity in the gas project of the 21st century, as reflected in the Memorandum of Understanding on strategic energy partnership signed by Azerbaijan and the European Union,” Ambassador Ramiz Hasanov said during a reception on Wednesday to mark the 100th anniversary of President Heidar Aliyev’s birth.
Hasanov recalled the early years of the country’s independence after the dissolution of the Soviet Union, and stressed that “Azerbaijan’s contributions to Europe’s energy security” were founded in 1994, “when the Azerbaijani government signed the ‘Contract of the Century’ to begin exploration” of its oil fields.
“This project,’ the ambassador explained, ‘integrated Azerbaijan into the world’s most advanced economies and transformed it into a key player in promoting stability in the Silk Road region’.
Now, Azerbaijan plans to “harness its potential in wind, solar and green hydrogen energy to continue the proactive energy diplomacy initiated by the creator of modern Azerbaijan, Heidar Aliyev”.
Ramiz Hasanov also took the opportunity to recall that Aliyev “was always sure that one day the historical territories would be liberated and territorial integrity restored”. “IDPs are returning to their historical lands,” he added, “which shows that the legacy of the National Leader is still alive”.
In addition to numerous ambassadors accredited to Spain, the reception was attended by UNWTO Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili; the President of the NGO Paz y Cooperación, Rosa Olazábal; representatives of the Madrid City Council and the academic world.
