Lobbying activity is undergoing great development in Spain. In recent years, numerous companies have appeared dedicated to representing interests before the different political decision-makers and public administrations. However, there is a great deal of confusion between the meaning of the word lobby as an activity and lobby as a subject, which is understood as an influence group. It is difficult to find a press article or commentary that understands and conveys the difference between the two concepts.
This is one of the reasons why Manuel del buen lobista (Manual of the Good Lobbyist) is an indispensable text for all those whose professional activity is related to political decision-making. Lobbying, as an activity, is presented as a tool consubstantial to Democracy; as a powerful way for civil society to exercise its right and fulfil its duty to interact with the political class. The more democracy, the more lobbying; and the more lobbying, the more democracy. As Professor Villoria points out in the prologue to this book, this work “seeks to configure the lobbying profession in Spain in accordance with standards of technical rigour and moral commitment typical of the most distinguished professional practices and recognised by the public”. The ultimate aim is to highlight the value of a profession that has been present since the birth of politics and which is key to preserving the quality of democracy.
