To celebrate Europe Day today, 9 May, the EUNIC Madrid network, with the support of five European cultural institutes in Madrid, will open this evening at 7 p.m. the exhibition Europa Ilustra at the Instituto Iberoamericano de Finlandia (Calle de San Agustín, 7), where the work of eight European illustrators will be presented in a diverse exhibition united by common European values. Free admission until full capacity is reached
This exhibition is supported by the Foro Cultural de Austria, the Instituto Francés, the Instituto Iberoamericano de Finlandia, the Instituto Polaco de Cultura and the Portuguese Embassy.
Maria Bouza, Hélène Druvert, António Jorge Gonçalves, Michaela Konrad, Marika Maijala, Piotr Perski, Rui Sousa and Gonçalo Viana are the artists chosen to draw a creative landscape of European illustration and represent the European values of peace, freedom, security and justice.
Austrian Michaela Konrad takes us back to the golden 1950s. Inspired by dystopian authors, she creates fictional comic book covers that offer a view of current events from the perspective of the past. Marika Maijala is one of Finland’s most famous contemporary illustrators. Her colourful works show a great technical richness and variety of styles. The French illustrator Hélène Druvert offers a selection of images from her new work, Vegetal, recently published in Spain, in which she paints the mysteries of nature. For his part, the series by Polish artist Piotr Perski proposes an imaginary journey through the fingerprints, prints of personal identity that distinguish us and become incarnations of collective memories. Ler e Ver Lisboa, published this year in Spain, brings together texts by 20 Portuguese writers and 20 illustrators. António Jorge Gonçalves, Gonçalo Viana, Maria Bouza and Rui Sousa bring their Lisbon to Madrid.
