The Gibraltar Maritime Authority confirmed yesterday in a statement that the work to remove all the cargo from the bulk carrier OS35, sunk since August 2022 some 400 metres off the coast of La Línea de la Concepción, in the province of Cádiz, has been completed.
According to the Gibraltarian government, 33,632 tonnes of steel bars have been removed from the ship, reaching “a critical milestone” in the operation.
Detailed planning and preparations are currently underway for the final removal of the wreck, which continues to progress as planned. Four vessels, two barges and two tugs, have been involved in this work since January to remove the hull of the bulk carrier and its contents from Gibraltar waters.
The OS35 sank in Gibraltar, some 400 metres off the beaches of La Línea de la Concepción at the end of August 2022, after colliding with an LNG tanker. Since then, work has been carried out to remove the vessel’s cargo, which was scheduled to be completed in May.
