Within the framework of Casa Asia’s Central Asia Observatory, this diplomatic cultural centre is offering this afternoon at 6pm the webinar Spain-Central Asia: 30 years of diplomatic relations.

2022 marked the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Spain and the Central Asian republics (Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan). On the occasion of the presentation of the Ruy de Clavijo Scholarship “Spain-Central Asia: 30 years of diplomatic relations”, Francisco Olmos will analyse the relations between Spain and the Central Asian countries in political, economic, social and cultural terms, as well as future opportunities for Spain’s role in the region.

The awarding of the Ruy de Clavijo Scholarships is part of Casa Asia’s Central Asia Observatory, which aims to facilitate the rapprochement between this region and Spain, and to highlight the growing geopolitical and economic importance of a geographical area that constitutes a nexus between East and West, and which is set to play a key role in international relations in the 21st century.

Jorge Urbiola, Spanish Ambassador to the Republics of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, will give some words of welcome, followed by a presentation by Rafael Bueno, Director of Politics, Society and Educational Programmes, Casa Asia, and then the conference by Francisco Olmos, Research Fellow at the Foreign Policy Centre in London, where he researches on the republics of Central Asia with special emphasis on nationalism, transition of power and national identities. He is a contributor to national and international media and writes in the specialised press on current affairs in the region. He holds an MA in International Relations and World Order from the University of Leicester, specialising in the new Great Game. Booking is required via this link.
