Author: Pep Coll.
The Centro Sefarad-Israel presents the book La larga siesta de Dios (The long nap of God), by Pep Coll, this afternoon at 6 p.m. in an online-only event.
France, May 1940. Samuel Silverstein, a Jewish haulier, finds himself trapped in the exodus of fugitives that the Nazi troops are pushing towards the Midi. As a result of a Luftwaffe bombing raid, Silverstein loses everything and begins a new life as an agent for an underground organisation working to save Jewish children by hiding them in the countryside. His job as a travelling salesman makes it easier for him to move around the villages and farmhouses of the Ariège valleys. He soon discovers a ruined monastery where dozens of children and adolescents survive, under constant threat from the gendarmes under the orders of the Vichy government. As Nazi barbarism sweeps across Europe and the Jews wait for Yahweh to wake up at last, crossing the Pyrenees seems the only way out. The presentation can only be followed on Centro Sefarad-Israel’s YouTube channel.
