Author: Meša Selimović.

The Fortress is one of the essential works of Yugoslav fiction and, along with The Dervish and Death, the literary peak of Meša Selimović (1910-1982). Unfolding as a moral fable, this book takes us back to 18th century Ottoman Sarajevo to witness the life and fate of Ahmet Šabo, a young man who has just returned from the war and who must make his way in a society that, in the eyes of someone who has survived the horrors of armed conflict, appears absurd, hypocritical and unjust. Ahmet Šabo’s naivety, immersed in an impossible journey in search of truth and meaning, clashes violently with the ruthless order on which the prevailing customs and mores are based. Love, friendship and loyalty to an elusive inner truth will be the milestones that guide the protagonist through this tragicomic journey through the shadows. Meša Selimović writes with enormous depth. His work, imbued with a deep understanding of human greatness and misery, is a search for the great questions that are the backbone of our lives.
