The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, participated yesterday virtually in the second edition of the Summit for Democracy, an initiative launched by the President of the United States, Joe Biden, in 2021 and in which he stressed that “Spain is a vibrant and solid democracy”.

The second Summit, which began yesterday and will conclude today under a hybrid format, is co-sponsored by the governments of the USA, Costa Rica, the Republic of Korea, the Netherlands and Zambia. During the first day, the leaders of the invited countries (including the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy) spoke virtually, in addition to Joe Biden himself.

During his speech, Sánchez pledged, on behalf of the government, to carry out a series of actions, including a dialogue program on inclusive democracy, a project to promote the effective participation of women in political life, an initiative on quality standards and transparency in infrastructure investments in Latin America, and the Fulfilling our commitments to domestic accountability program.

He also assured that Spain has fulfilled the commitments made during the first Summit for Democracy. “We have increased transparency in our government,” he continued. “Spain is a vibrant and solid democracy,” said Sánchez, who highlighted, by way of example, the accountability mechanism promoted by the Government. He also reported on the cooperation program called Democracy, designed by the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) and which is endowed with six million euros for 2023.
