Spanish engineering company Indra is to deploy a pioneering integrated system at India’s main airports that will centralize air traffic surveillance and management and improve flight capacity and safety throughout all phases of flights.

After a demanding open international bidding process that has lasted more than two years, the Airport Authority of India (AAI) has awarded Indra and its local partners the contract for more than 55 million euros to deploy this pioneering solution in five of the country’s main air traffic control centers and airports, namely those of Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Navi Mumbai and Mopa.

This contract reinforces Indra as a leader in air traffic systems in India, where its radar network covers the surveillance of 80% of the country’s airspace and has modernized more than 40 centers and control towers, among other projects, according to the company in a press release.

Indra’s solution includes the most advanced tools in the sector to perform automated air traffic management and tracking of civil aircraft from the moment they leave their parking lot and begin to circulate through the departure airport until they land and arrive at the parking lot at the destination airport.

Thanks to this state-of-the-art technology, air traffic controllers at these five centers will be able to manage traffic much more efficiently, controlling a greater volume of traffic in less time and with the highest level of safety, efficiency and cost-effectiveness. This will improve safety and passenger service by reducing average flight time and delays, as the solution calculates in advance the exact position of each aircraft in all phases of the flight to detect any conflicts and offer alternatives in advance.

Indra’s technology will also contribute to the sustainability and environmental friendliness of air transport in India by helping to reduce fuel consumption, CO2 emissions and noise pollution. The company will work with partners in the country on the project, also contributing to local development.
