March 17, 2023
in Leisure, Movies

Until the 1st of April, Casa América on Fridays and Saturdays at 19.30 the film La camarista (2018), the remarkable debut of filmmaker Lila Avilés and one of the most outstanding films of Mexican and Latin American cinema.

La camarista had its world premiere at the Toronto Festival and was an official selection at the San Sebastian Festival (New Directors). It also won the award for Best Mexican Feature Film at the prestigious Morelia Film Festival in Mexico and the Special Jury Prize at the Havana Festival. In the 2018 edition, the Mexican Film Academy awarded it the Ariel for Best First Film and in 2019, it received the Platinum Award for Best Fiction First Film.

About this film, its director said that “while I was filming, I couldn’t stop thinking about the working class, about how there are millions of people who work their backsides off to get ahead, and I was very moved. In Mexico the only issue is not violence and drug trafficking, there are also many people who work non-stop to have a better way of life for themselves and their families and that’s where this story came from”.

Starring Gabriela Cartol, Teresa Sánchez and Agustina Quinci, the film tells how the desire of a lonely chambermaid named Eve to be someone else will make her discover the different universes behind each object abandoned by the guests in the luxurious rooms she cleans in the hotel where she works. Eve dreams through them and transforms her loneliness into companionship.
