“We, the member states of the European Union, must do more to ensure that the war ends, that Ukraine does not lose an iota of its territory and that the entire international community applies sanctions against Russia,” said the Greek ambassador to Spain, Ilias Fotopoulos, during the reception he hosted to commemorate his country’s National Day.
“In particular,” Fotopoulos demanded, “the European Union must avoid the model that promotes only an economic community and immediately veer towards a political community, thus achieving the true place it deserves on the international scene.”
The head of the Greek Mission explained that, “with the achievement of this objective, we reject aggressive behavior of third parties, we protect our vital space, we move within the framework of solidarity and we ensure the prosperity of our peoples”.
In this regard, after underlining “the very good relations between my country and Spain“, he said that both countries must contribute “in a positive way to the formation of a common vision of unification of all the countries of Europe”.
Fotopoulos, who described the invasion of Ukraine as “an unjust war within the European space”, said that “our common values and principles are the strongest weapons for us to build a better world, consolidating peace and contributing positively to the development of a balanced and dignified society for all”.
In the presence of Her Royal Highness Princess Irene, who was the guest of honor at the reception, he briefly reviewed the “200 years since the Greek nation rose up to claim the foundation of an independent state” and underlined the principles that drive its foreign policy: “the peaceful resolution of differences, the principles of international law, dialogue and the strengthening of its presence in a constantly changing world”.
The ambassador also had a very special memory for the tragedy “that my country has experienced with the terrible train accident in Tempe, where many young people lost their lives”.
The event was attended by numerous ambassadors, among them the ambassador of the United States, Julissa Reynoso, and the president of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Congress of Deputies, Pau Marí-Klose.
