The Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, announced last Friday that Spain has pledged 20 million euros to assist Venezuelan refugees and migrants caused by the humanitarian crisis.
Albares made the announcement at the Conference of Solidarity with Venezuelan refugees and migrants, which has managed to raise a total of 810 million euros to try to alleviate the humanitarian crisis in the country and in the communities hosting the refugees.
According to the foreign minister on his Twitter account, Spain will contribute 20 million euros. “Spain is committed to the Venezuelan people and to finding a solution to the regional crisis by supporting dialogue,” he stressed.
The conference for the refugee crisis in Venezuela was organised by the European Union and Canada, with the aim of raising the visibility in the international community of the humanitarian situation in Venezuela, considered one of the worst funded crises in the world.
The funds raised will be used for food assistance, health, shelter, protection, education and legal aid for Venezuelan refugees both in the country and in host countries.
The conference organisers, the EU and Canada, have pledged 75 million euros and 58.55 million Canadian dollars respectively to respond to humanitarian needs, as well as to support the long-term integration of refugees and migrants in host communities.
The US has also committed to Venezuelan refugees by providing more than 140 million euros in additional humanitarian assistance, as well as 31 million dollars in development assistance to respond to the needs of Venezuelan refugees and migrants.
