The Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, said yesterday that the Spanish Presidency of the EU Council “will strengthen the transatlantic link” because “the US is Europe’s natural ally” and because “transatlantic values are more important than ever”.

Albares participated yesterday in the event Spain, Europe and the United States in the New Global Context, organized by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in Spain (AmChamSpain) at the Wellington Hotel in Madrid.

During the breakfast meeting, the president of AmChamSpain, Jaime Malet, said that the Spanish presidency, which will take place during the second half of 2023, will take place “at a time of reconfiguration of the geoeconomic map” and should serve to boost “the important transatlantic link”.

For his part, Albares declared that, in the current geopolitical moment, “transatlantic values such as diversity, freedom and plurality are more important than ever in the face of authoritarian models” and insisted on the importance of European and American unity to face challenges such as the destabilization of the energy market, the war in Ukraine and climate change. He also assured that “the Spanish Presidency of the Council will strengthen the transatlantic link”, because “the US is Europe’s natural ally”.

“Spain has a solid relationship with the US and with the signing of the Joint Declaration we have strengthened relations to face global challenges”, added Albares, referring to the Joint Declaration signed last June in Madrid by the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, and the US President, Joe Biden, on the margins of the NATO Summit.
