The Diplomat
Until 21 May, the Pardo Bazán room of the Museo Lázaro Galdiano in Madrid (Calle Serrano, 122) is hosting the exhibition Romantic Visionaries: Balke / Lucas / Hertervig, in collaboration with the Norwegian and Spanish Embassies.
The exhibition is organised by the Museum and the Centro de Estudios Europa Hispánica (CEEH), the Stavanger Kunstmuseum and the Nordic Institute of Art (NIA).
This major exhibition brings together for the first time the work of the Norwegian artists Peder Balke (1804-1887) and Lars Hertervig (1830-1902), and the Spanish artist Eugenio Lucas Velázquez (1817-1870), in the photo his painting Acantilado, to offer a parallel between their respective landscapes and show how, without knowing each other but with a common sensibility and a common desire for innovation, they captured their inner visions of nature using experimental formats and techniques. In this way they anticipated, to a certain extent, the loose way of painting of Impressionism and other modern artistic movements.
Admission to the museum is free and it can be visited from 10 am to 8 pm from Tuesday to Saturday; on Sundays from 10 am to 3 pm.
Romantic Visionaries situates the three artists in the Romantic visionary tradition -in tune with other 19th century landscape painters such as Caspar David Friedrich, J. M. W. Turner or Victor Hugo- taking it further, exploring for the first time this phenomenon as transnational and at the same time providing a new understanding of a little-studied chapter in the history of art.
