The Centro Cultural Coreano, in collaboration with the Cervantes y Cía bookshop in Madrid (Calle del Pez, 27), presents the series of literary meetings Korea in Words, which will be attended by Kim Cho-yeop and Chung Bo-ra, authors of If We Can’t Travel at the Speed of Light and Cursed Bunny.
On Saturday 25 March at 12 noon, the meeting with Kim Cho-yeop will take place at the Cervantes y Compañía bookshop in Madrid, the author will be assisted by an interpreter; likewise, the following day, Sunday 26 March, at the same place and time, there will be a meeting with Chung Bo-ra, in this case the session will be held entirely in English. And finally, on Monday 27 March at 7 p.m. there will be another meeting with Kim Cho-yeop, this time in the bookshop El libro imposible in Ponferrada, León (calle Gil y Carrasco, 2, Local bajo); the author will be assisted by an interpreter. For her part, Kim Hye-jin, author of Sobre mi hija, will greet readers telematically.
During the period indicated, Cervantes y Compañía in Madrid will host a space dedicated exclusively to Korean literature. This space will contain publications of various literary genres, including graphic novels, with exponents such as Keum Suk Gendry-Kim, children’s books and poetry. There will also be a reading club with four sessions with the participation of literature specialists from the Centro Cultural Coreano in Spain and Marina Sanmartín, novelist and crime novel critic, who will invite visitors to explore Korean literature. On Tuesday 18 April, at 7 p.m., there will be a literary discussion featuring Kim Hye-jin’s About My Daughter. Although Korea in Words will end in April, the Korean literature book club will run until June. La vegetariana, by Han Kang, will be the protagonist of the sessions on 3 and 16 May at El Libro Imposible in Ponferrada and Cervantes y Compañía in Madrid. On 20 June, Almendra, by Son Won-pyung, will bring the reading club in Madrid to a close.
March and April are ideal months to discover Korean literature. For its part, Chapter One will be held from 23 to 26 March at Matadero in Madrid. For the first time in its history, this event will focus on the literature of a single country: Korea. The programme includes meetings with Korean authors and a performance by the Korean contemporary music group Haepaary. In addition, a Korean film series will also be held during this period, which will include films based on Korean literature or on the lives of some of the most important authors in Korean history.
