The International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA) is an intergovernmental organisation that supports sustainable democracy worldwide. Kevin Casas-Zamora has been its Secretary General since August 2019. Casas-Zamora has more than 25 years of experience in democratic governance. He is also a researcher, analyst, educator, consultant and public official. Previously, he was the second vice-president and minister of National Planning of Costa Rica; secretary of Political Affairs of the Organization of American States; and national coordinator of the United Nations Development Programme’s Human Development Report. The latest report on the Global State of Democracy, published by IDEA in December 2022, will set some of the tone for the conference.
