Verdemar-Ecologists in Action warned yesterday of the arrival in the morning of a new Astute class nuclear submarine at the Gibraltar military base and criticised the fact that “it puts Andalusia at nuclear risk by maintaining the entry of submarines”.
The spokesman for Verdemar, Antonio Muñoz, recalled in statements to Europa Press, that these Astute class submarines have been making repairs in Gibraltar in June and July 2021 and pointed out that “nuclear reactors have multiple threats such as earthquakes, floods, extreme weather events or aging, and the very management of the nuclear industry and accidents, for which they are not prepared”. “In addition, a large number of nuclear reactors are beyond their design life,” he added.
“We suspect that repairs are still being made to these floating bombs, since the HMS Tireless left the waters of Algeciras Bay 20 years ago,” he said.
Verdemar insisted that “the military port of Gibraltar is becoming a port where the UK takes its submarines for repairs and this type of work on nuclear submarines is putting the population of the Strait of Gibraltar at risk”.
“We call once and for all for Gibraltar to be free of nuclear-powered devices and other vessels that are veritable floating bombs. We do not have nor do we want a nuclear emergency plan, we want them to leave”, he concluded.
