The Instituto Francés analyses the power of memes today

February 28, 2023
in Culture & Art, Leisure

A conference entitled From parody to digital pandemic: the power of memes will be held at the Media Library of the Instituto Francés in Madrid this evening at 19:00. Free admission, advance booking recommended. Event in French.

With concrete examples and illustrated content, the media and image specialist François Jost and Nancy Berthier, director of the Casa de Velázquez and a specialist in visual arts at the Sorbonne, will address the phenomenon known as “memes”, which has invaded the digital world with impetus during the pandemic.

Memes are generally defined as a type of content made up of images accompanied by a short text. They are transmitted via the internet and social media and have recently flooded the digital landscape. This new manifestation of pop culture says a lot about the world, current affairs and ourselves. Not only to mock but also to denounce, support a cause or simply express our fears. Through a semiological analysis of this phenomenon, the speakers will examine the motives, uses and political and social functions of “mimic” culture. Booking is essential at this link.
