Four Taiwanese artists – Chang Teng-Yuan, Hsieh Jung-Wei, Wu Wei-Ting and Jazz Szu-Ying Chen – are the protagonists of the Taiwanese Art Week that the Economic and Cultural Office of Taipei in Spain is organising in Madrid, in collaboration with the galleries Yiri Arts and Chini Gallery.

The exhibitions will be open to the public throughout this weekend at the Art Madrid (Galería de Cristal del Palacio de Cibeles) and Hybrid Art Fair (Hotel Petit Palace Santa Bárbara. Plaza de Santa Bárbara, 10).

The representative of the Economic and Cultural Office of Taipei, Ambassador José María Liu, pointed out at the opening of the exhibitions that “for me and for Taiwan, Spain is one of the cradles, one of the most creative cultures in Europe. Therefore, for Taiwanese artists who have the opportunity to come to Spain and exhibit their creations, it is always a precious opportunity. For this reason, Art Madrid is for us a very, very important cultural activity.”

“Art Madrid,” continued Liu, “is a great opportunity for painters to make direct contacts with the Spanish people. My main mission as a representative of Taiwan is to bring us closer to Spain, and one more practical way is through culture, through cultural exchange.”

“Since I arrived in Madrid,” Ambassador Liu commented, “Taiwanese art has been very present in the city’s international cultural activities. We have managed to nourish the cultural programme of museums, cultural centres and art centres all over Spain with the work of the most representative artists of contemporary Taiwanese art. This year, we are organising for the second time the Taiwan Art Week in Madrid and in this way we can show the Spanish public the most current and creative art scene in the city of Taipei”.

The artist Chang Teng-Yuan presents a new series of paintings under the title EARTH Beta. Through a virtual world of curious parrot-like characters, he reflects the situation after the Covid-19 epidemic.

Hsieh Jung-Wei compares himself to a paper farmer, and conceives the role of drawing as a field of work. He is an artist who creates his works with pen strokes, writes continuously, constructs a complete image and evokes the power of time that cannot be ignored.

The artist Wu Wei-Ting uses smell as a design idea, and his work is like a collection of smells between Taiwan and Spain. He discovered that Spain is one of the places of origin of citrus fruits, and in his works he tries to express the smell of the sea and citrus fruits through the organic forms of his sculptures and installations.

At the Hybrid Art Fair, Jazz artist Szu-Ying Chen has been consistently exhibiting her work both in Taiwan and in the UK, where she has lived for 10 years. Some of her most recent collaborative projects are with Houndstoooth, the Fabric Club record label in London, with a critically acclaimed compilation. His work seeks to integrate the aesthetics of medieval art and medical anatomical structure to shape a unique visual art language that combines art and music to express thoughts.

On the occasion of this participation in Taiwan Art Week Madrid 2023, the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Spain has launched a special printing of limited edition promotional bags. The main image of the bags is a work by artist Ya-Nung Huang inspired by Madrid’s iconic sculpture El Oso y el Madroño and Diego Velázquez’s famous painting Las Meninas, which visitors can redeem by sharing photos related to Taiwanese artists via Facebook and Instagram to get one of the limited edition bags completely free of charge.
