The Fundación Japón is organising a new edition of the Contemporary Japanese Cinema Series 2023 from 14 to 22 February at the Cineteca Madrid (Plaza de Legazpi, 8).

The aim of this annual cycle is to show the best recent Japanese cinema and the work of some of the new filmmakers who have attracted the attention of audiences and critics both in Japan and abroad. While previous editions have shown the work of filmmakers such as Ryûsuke Hamaguchi, Yûya Ishii and Yukiko Mishima, this year’s edition once again features a group of directors, screenwriters and performers who, either because of their youth or because they have recently made works that have been critically acclaimed and have not had the chance to be seen in cinemas outside Japan, have deserved to be included in this year’s selection.

New or old talents who, with films produced mostly in the last few years, show similar concerns, such as the attention to small stories, the relationship of their characters with their surroundings or the taste for working with young and barely known actors. This year, directors such as Shinya Tsukamoto, Masaaki Yuasa or Yukiko Mishima will once again be present, and new talents such as Takeshi Fukunaga or Kenji Iwaisawa will join a selection of five films that can be seen in Zaragoza, Madrid and Valencia during the months of February and March.

Ainu Mosir, Tuesday 14 February; ON-GAKU: Our Sound, Wednesday 15 February; Inu-Oh (in the photo) Friday 17 February; Shape of Red, Tuesday 21 February, and Killing (Zan), Wednesday 22 February, are the days on which these films will be screened in Madrid.
