The Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, claims that relations between Spain and Morocco have improved on the basis of a strengthened political dialogue and mutual respect: “What matters are the results. We are better”, he declared in an interview published yesterday in the newspaper ‘La Vanguardia’.

Following the summit held by the two governments last week in Rabat, Albares played down the importance of the fact that King Mohammed VI was not present and stressed that “there have never been so many Spanish and Moroccan ministers on both sides of the table”.

According to the foreign minister, Spain and Morocco have agreed on a timetable for the gradual start-up of customs in Ceuta and Melilla: “We don’t want avalanches, we don’t want to relive scenes that are unworthy of the relationship between the two countries”.

As for Western Sahara, he points out that “the solution will not be imposed by Spain”, but will be proposed by the personal envoy of the UN Secretary General, Staffan de Mistura, whom he has described as a great diplomat who has the support of the government.
