The Minister of Defense, Margarita Robles, specified yesterday before the plenary session of the Congress that Spain will send six Leopard 2A4 battle tanks to Ukraine, a quantity that could be increased “if necessary and if allied countries request it”.
In response to an interpellation of the Popular Group, the minister explained that these tanks are at the moment in the facilities of the company Santa Bárbara in Alcalá de Guadaira (Seville), where they are being repaired, because they were in “very deficient use” in some facilities of the Army in Casetas (Zaragoza).
She also said that the repairs could be finished by the end of March and that the tanks could be sent to Ukraine at the end of March or beginning of April to be integrated into a battalion with other countries. Besides, Robles informed that Spain is training 55 Ukrainian military personnel, 40 in the handling of the tanks as crew and ten in their maintenance.
