The Diplomat
The Chief Minister of Gibraltar, Fabian Picardo, yesterday praised the work carried out by the Spanish diplomat Julio Montesino, who died on Sunday in Toronto (Canada) and who for almost nine years was the special delegate of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the Campo de Gibraltar.
Picardo conveyed the “condolences of the people of Gibraltar” on the death of Montesino, who from 2008 to 2017 acted as the Spanish Government’s ‘antenna’ for the affairs of the Rock.
The chief minister recalled that Montesino acted as a mediator between Gibraltar and Spain, following the Córdoba Agreement, and stressed that “he did so in an open, moderate and always respectful manner with Gibraltar’s views, communicating well with both politicians and journalists for the development of an open dialogue between the Spanish Foreign Ministry and Gibraltar”.
Picardo added that he has written to the Spanish Foreign Minister and to Julio Montesino’s widow to express “the sincere condolences of the Government and people of Gibraltar on his sad passing”.
