Tonight at 8 p.m., the film La ceremonia (La cérémonie), directed by Claude Chabrol in 1995, will be screened at the theatre of the Instituto Francés in Madrid. Screening in French with Spanish subtitles.
After presenting the play Servir, by Tatiana Carel, the Instituto Francés of Madrid continues its programme based on Jean Genet’s The Maids, with this screening, a landmark in French cinema, starring Isabelle Huppert and Sandrine Bonnaire.
Sophie, an efficient but cold and calculating woman, starts working as a housekeeper for the demanding Madame Lelièvre. One day, she meets Jeanne, a very nosy employee of the Saint-Malo post office, and a very special relationship develops between the two of them.
Inspired by Jean Genet’s The Maids by Jean Genet and Ruth Rendell’s novel A Trial by Stone, Claude Chabrol presents a new adaptation of the story of the Papin sisters, two French maids who brutally murdered their employer’s wife and daughter in 1933. Tickets can be booked at this link.
