After almost three years at the head of the Haitian Embassy in Spain, first as Chargé d’Affaires and then as Ambassador, Louis Marie Montfort Saintil has ended his mission in Spain, during which he has been intensely active in promoting bilateral relations in all areas.
For the time being, Ambassador Guy G. Lamothe has been appointed Chargé d’Affaires in Spain. Lamothe, a lawyer and economist, has headed Haiti’s missions in Mexico and China and was director general of the Investment Facilitation Centre in Port-au-Prince.
Sources told The Diplomat that is not ruled out the possibility of the Haitian government requesting Lamothe’s official appointment as ambassador as soon as a new president is elected.
Haiti is going through a period of instability, following the assassination of President Jovenas Moïse in July 2020, which has led the Prime Minister, Ariel Henry, to appoint a Transitional Council to choose the members of a Provisional Electoral Council. His goal is to be able to hold presidential elections this year, as he has reiterated on several occasions.
