The Ministry of Education of the Republic of China (Taiwan) has announced a total of sixteen scholarships to study Mandarin Chinese and a further three scholarships for bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral studies, aimed at students of Spanish nationality who wish to study in Taiwan.

The first sixteen scholarships, called Huayu Scholarships, are aimed at people over 18 years of age with a minimum educational level of high school, and are divided into two modalities according to their duration: four scholarships for one year, and another twelve scholarships for six months, all of them starting in September 2023. The amount of the Huayu scholarships is NT$25,000 per month (approx. 760 euros).

The scholarships for Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral degrees, known as Taiwan Scholarships, are also aimed at people over 18 years of age with a minimum educational level of bachelor’s degree, and will be used to study university degrees, in Mandarin Chinese or English, at universities and authorised centres in Taiwan. Three types of Taiwan Scholarships are available depending on the level of study: Undergraduate scholarships are for a maximum of four years, from 1 September 2023 to 31 August 2027, and the amount is NT$15,000 per month (approx. 450 euros). Master’s scholarships are for up to two years, from 1 September 2023 to 31 August 2025, and are for NT$20,000 per month (approx. 600 euros). And PhD scholarships are for up to four years, from 1 September 2023 to 31 August 2027, and are also for NT$ 20,000 per month (approx. 600 euros). In all three cases, a maximum grant of NT$ 40,000 (approx. EUR 1,200) can be applied for in addition to tuition and fees.

For all scholarships, airfare, accommodation, meals, transport, insurance, tutoring of theses and other additional costs are to be paid by the scholarship holders. The universities and centres where the scholarship holders study will grant the monthly allowance depending on the students’ attendance and grades during the courses. The application period for both types of scholarships is from 1 February to 31 March 2023, and the documentation should be sent by post to the following address: Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Spain. Attn. Call for applications for the Huayu Scholarship 2023 / Attn. Convocatoria de Beca Taiwan 2023 (as the case may be). C/ Rosario Pino, 14-16, piso 18 drcha., 28020 Madrid. Tel. 91 571 84 26.

You can consult all the requirements of the official call for applications for both types of scholarships and download the application forms on the websites of each type of scholarship, Huayu or Taiwan.
