Next Friday at 8 p.m., the Instituto Francés of Madrid presents the play Servir, by Tatiana Carel with Fátima Delgado, inspired by Jean Genet’s The Maids, both personal and universal.
Clara and Solange are two maids who live with their mistress in a well-to-do house in the Salamanca neighbourhood. They love and hate her at the same time… Today is a big day. The mistress is organising an important party under the supervision of her maids. They are both excited and upset at the same time. They begin to prepare the event by receiving the servants hired for this great occasion. They both savour the taste of power by giving orders to other subordinates. But something will come to disturb them: an unwelcome phone call, a piece of ominous news that will bring to light a hidden secret. A secret that will lead them on a slow descent into hell, dragging down anyone who gets in their way.
After a two-month artistic residency at the Instituto Francés in Madrid, Tatiana Carel presents a play with immersive parts in which the audience will feel like one of the servants of this house. It is a theatrical and performative reflection on the idea of serving others. We are referring to the women who dedicate their lives to it: the inmates or the new postmodern slavery.
