The Peruvian government of President Dina Boluarte has dismissed the ambassador to Spain, Óscar Maúrtua de Romaña, who also served as ambassador to Andorra and representative of the Andean country to the World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO), according to a supreme resolution published in the official newspaper El Peruano.

The resolution does not indicate the reasons for his dismissal, although the Peruvian government thanks him for “the important services rendered” and stresses that “the date of termination of his functions will be set by ministerial resolution”.

Maúrtua, 75, had been in charge of the Peruvian embassy in Madrid since June 2022, after having been foreign minister during the government of former president Pedro Castillo. He had already held the post of foreign minister on another occasion, between 2005 and 2006, when Alejandro Toledo was president, as well as having been ambassador to Ecuador, Thailand, Bolivia and Canada.

When Castillo’s failed self-coup took place in early December last year, Óscar Maúrtua resigned for “democratic convictions”, stating in a communiqué that he was doing so “irrevocably” and acting with “respect for the rule of law”.

The ambassador remained in his post, however, until the new government made a decision on the head of the embassy.

For the time being, the Boluarte government has not appointed a replacement for Maúrtua, nor has the foreign minister, Ana Gervasi, made any statement on the matter.
