The diplomat Juan Ignacio Morro is Spain’s new permanent representative ambassador to the Council of Europe, which is based in Strasbourg.

The appointment was approved this Tuesday by the Council of Ministers, which thus brings to an end the tenure of Manuel Montobbio, who will now move to Paris as ‘number two’ in the Permanent Representation of Spain to the OECD.

Juan Ignacio Morro, born in Valladolid in 1962, entered the diplomatic service in 1992 and until July last year was Spain’s ambassador to the Republic of Korea, a post to which he was appointed in 2018.

Prior to that, Morro was director general of the United Nations and Human Rights from 2017 to 2018 and assistant director general for Non-Proliferation and Disarmament from 2014 to 2017.

Throughout his career, he has been posted at the Spanish embassies in Beijing and at the Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York.

Previously, he was Head of Cabinet of the Under-Secretary and Deputy Head of Cabinet of the Secretary of State for the European Union. He also held the post of Consul in Geneva, Secretary of the Embassy in Moscow and Seoul and Head of Area in the Sub-Directorate General for North Africa in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
