Hungarian MEP Enikó Gyóri, a former Hungarian ambassador to Spain, yesterday called on the European Union to take action against the government of Pedro Sánchez for its continued attacks on freedoms, during the European Parliament’s session on the protection of the rule of law in Spain.

The MEP from Fidesz, the party of President Viktor Orban, said that the Spanish government “uses recovery funds with great opacity, without providing information, while blackmailing the Commission not to give funds to Hungary”. He went on to ask: “When are you going to take action against the Spanish government, or do you only take action against conservative governments that represent values like freedom and family?”.

According to Gyóri, “Sanchez government functions thanks to an agreement with anti-constitutional and far-left parties, with funding from Maduro and Venezuela. And their activity involves fulfilling their agenda”. An agenda which, he said, “consists of dismantling the rule of law, liberties, interfering in private life and putting the daily security of Spaniards at risk”.

Gyóri ended his speech by asking “do you have no scruples about the independence of justice and do you have the courage to criticise us for our rule of law?”.
