Spain supports the constitution of the International Commission against Corruption and Impunity in Honduras, promoted by the government of the President of that country, Xiomara Castro.

This was expressed yesterday by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, to his Honduran counterpart, Enrique Reina, with whom he met in Brasilia, where they both attended the inauguration of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva as President of Brazil.

Albares, who had already had the opportunity to meet Reina at the beginning of the year, on the occasion of the inauguration of Xiomara Castro as President of Honduras, said on his Twitter account that yesterday they had a “good meeting” and that they had discussed “bilateral relations and the challenges facing the region”.

The minister added that Spain “supports the constitution of the International Commission against Corruption and Impunity in Honduras.

The Commission was one of Xiomara Castro’s campaign promises, which she ratified when she took office on 27 January. In January 2020, the Honduran parliament failed to extend the four-year term of the Organisation of American States’ (OAS) Mission to Support the Fight against Corruption and Impunity in Honduras (MACCIH) for a second term.
