This afternoon at 6 p.m., the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza will host the presentation of the book inspired by the legacy of Grygoriy Skovoroda, Bajad, Ángeles del Cielo (Descend, Angels from Heaven), translated into Spanish and published with the support of the Ukrainian Embassy.
Grygoriy Skovoroda is a key figure in Baroque literature. His works, in particular his poetry and philosophy, are iconic in the history of Ukrainian literature. The real world, according to Grygoriy Skovoroda, is the fruit of the harmonious interaction of three forms: the macrocosm, the microcosm and the symbolic world. Without understanding one of them, it is impossible to understand the other two. This is why the theme of “Understanding oneself” runs through most of his work. Skovoroda considered the pursuit of freedom as the highest gift, a human good, the main purpose and measure of life, and the “spirit of freedom that is born in us” as the most important human value.
For three hundred years, the world perceived Skovoroda as a modern mystical poet, the founder of the Ukrainian “philosophy of the heart”, a thinker, a Christian philosopher, who outlined the humanistic contours of Ukrainian identity. In this way, Skovoroda became a key figure of Ukrainian Baroque literature and of the whole Ukrainian spiritual tradition from Antiquity to the present day. He was a man of freedom and honour.
