On the occasion of the Day of Remembrance 2023 – which commemorates the 78th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp (27 January 1945) – the Instituto Italiano de Cultura of Madrid, in collaboration with Centro Sefarad-Israel, presents tomorrow Thursday at 18.30 the Shoah Memorial in Milan through the narration of one of its designers, Professor Arch. Guido Morpurgo and the images of the photographers who have reinterpreted its articulation and complexity. Free admission with prior reservation.
The Holocaust Memorial is a highly symbolic place inside Milan Central Station from which, between 1943 and 1945, thousands of people were deported to the Nazi extermination camps. This station is perhaps today the only railway infrastructure that preserves a shunting yard that survived the destruction and irreversible alterations suffered by the European stations used for the deportations, of which only a few traces remain. It is therefore a historical document of special testimonial relevance.
The Shoah Memorial project in Milan, conceived as a place to generate collective awareness and identity, is based on the idea of removing this hidden station used for the deportations from the socio-cultural uprooting to which it has been subjected for sixty years. The aim is to re-establish in this place a Laboratory of Memory that is not limited to information and the memory of persecution and extermination, but is projected towards the re-elaboration of the difficult legacy of the Shoah, as a terrain for the construction of culture and awareness for the present and the future.
