Madrid welcomes the Chinese New Year and art is very much present in the cultural events. Over the next few days, residents and visitors to the Usera district can enjoy up to seven free artistic activities as part of the programme organised by the Department of Culture, Tourism and Sport and the Usera District Council, with the collaboration of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China, Chinese associations in Usera, artistic collectives, residents’ associations, Casa Asia and the Instituto Confucio of Madrid.
The exhibition Lo nuevo, by the Madrid photographer Lupe de la Vallina, portrays people from the Chinese community living in Usera during the preparations for the Chinese New Year 2023. The group show Year of the Rabbit brings together interpretations of the animal that is the protagonist of this year’s edition by national and international artists. The Plaza de la Junta de Distrito de Usera will host an exhibition of traditional Hanfu clothing, where the public can try on China’s oldest traditional dress, caricatures by artist Xie Tianzi and giant calligraphies. Chinese illustrators from the Madrid School of Illustration draw the 12 animals of the zodiac on three large totem poles. The Centro Cultural Usera-Casa Madera hosts an interactive and participatory photo mural with hundreds of images by Lucía Sun. The festive poster, designed by Juan Carlos Paz (Bakea) on a photograph by Francesco Pinton, continues the series of Chinese zodiac animals with a friendly rabbit waving from the West Park.
