The Minister of Defense, Margarita Robles, visited yesterday the four Ukrainian war wounded who arrived last Saturday in Madrid and are receiving treatment at the Central Defense Hospital Gómez Ulla.
Received by the General Inspector of Defense Health, Major General Juan Sánchez Ramos, and the Director of the HCD Gómez Ulla, Brigadier General Francisco Areta, the Minister went to the rooms of the patients who have different amputations and traumatic injuries by firearm or blast wave and was able to know their evolution and medical assessment, according to the Ministry.
She also conveyed to them all the love and support for their speedy recovery and reiterated Spain’s firm commitment to helping the Ukrainian people in the war against Russia. “We feel very proud to be able to help the Ukrainian people in the war against Putin. You are doing heroic work in Ukraine. You know that your struggle for peace is a struggle in which we are all engaged. You are an example to the world,” she said. For their part, all the wounded conveyed to the Minister their “gratitude to Spain for all the help”, they were optimistic about their speedy recovery and stressed “their desire to return to the front line as soon as possible”.
Since the beginning of the conflict almost a year ago, Spain has treated 43 wounded Ukrainian soldiers, 25 of whom have returned to their country. In addition to the four wounded at Gómez Ulla, there are 14 Ukrainians treated at the Military Hospital of Zaragoza. The General Directorate of Defense Policy, together with the Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration, is arranging for their accommodation in Madrid so that they can continue their treatment on an outpatient basis.
