The Austrian singer Isabel Frey (in the photo) will star tomorrow, Tuesday, in the concert Revolutionary Yiddishland, organised by the Centro Sefarad-Israel and the Austrian Cultural Forum, which will take place at the headquarters of the Sephardic Centre at 6 pm. This concert is part of the activities surrounding the exhibition Mauthausen: Shared Memories and Holocaust Remembrance Month.
Yiddish singer Isabel Frey has defied her Viennese bourgeois upbringing by embracing the repertoire of revolutionary and resistance songs in Yiddish. Songs of class struggle and anti-fascism, even those of 100 years ago, can still be understood in the contemporary political context. In this concert, the Viennese singer will present a series of old and new revolutionary songs in Yiddish with a particular focus on the songs of the partisans and the Jewish resistance against the Nazis.
She will also present her own contemporary settings of women’s poetry in Yiddish, expanding the definition of what makes a song ‘revolutionary’, and discuss contemporary Jewish language revivals, such as the growing interest in Yiddish and Ladino.
