The PP’s Deputy Secretary for Institutional Affairs, Esteban González Pons, believes that holding the rotating Presidency of the European Union is “overrated” because “it tends to serve more for publicity than anything else”.
Furthermore, he warns, in an interview with the Association of Registrars, that with the institutional crisis in Spain, the government of Pedro Sánchez, who will lead the EU presidency during the second half of the year, is not in a position to “give the European Union lessons in anything”.
“Frankly, the rotating national presidencies of the European Union are overrated, in the six months they last there is no time to exert any decisive influence on dossiers that have been in the pipeline for years”,he points out. He adds: “For example, the government’s programme foresees meetings in different Spanish cities when everyone knows that the working meetings are in Brussels and without tourist visits”.
In addition, the PP leader alludes to the institutional crisis in Spain, after the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ) has been blocked for more than four years. “With the institutional crisis we are suffering, I don’t know if we are in a position to give the European Union lessons in anything. However, anything that serves to strengthen Europeanism in Spain, even if it is propaganda, will be well invested,” he says.
