Their Majesties the King and Queen of Spain will attend the funeral in Athens on Monday for Constantine of Greece, who died on Tuesday at the age of 82, in a private hospital in the Greek capital, where he had been admitted in a serious condition.

The Royal Household announced yesterday that Don Felipe and Doña Letizia will attend the funeral of the last monarch of Greece.

The funeral will also be attended by Queen Sofia, Constantine’s sister, who has already travelled to Greece. King Juan Carlos is also expected to travel to the Greek capital from his residence in the United Arab Emirates. The Infantas Elena and Cristina are also expected to be present, which will be the first public meeting of the six of them since January 2020, when they attended the funeral for the Infanta Doña Pilar, sister of Don Juan Carlos.

The Greek ex-king’s state of health had been very unstable for several years. His last public appearance was on 23 October, when he attended the wedding of his youngest son, Prince Philippos of Greece to Nina Flohr, in a wheelchair.

Despite having been king of Greece for nine years between 1964 and 1973, Constantine will be buried as an ordinary citizen at Tatoi, the former summer residence of the Greek monarchy, after the Greek government refused to hold a state funeral as requested by the family. The private funeral will take place at the Metropolitan Cathedral of Athens.

Constantine II was King of Greece from 1964 until 1973, when the monarchy was abolished by referendum in 1974.
